The Latest in Multifocal Technology
"This new lens provides the very best near (reading) vision, and wonderful distance vision. Many people are able to work at their computer without glasses." states Dr. Andy Watkins, medical director and surgeon at the Watkins Eye Center in Houston.
"The Tecnis® lens provides the best near vision in all light conditions when compared to other multifocal IOLs (Intraocular Lenses) on the market today. In addition, the complaints of glare and halos common to all multifocal IOLs are much less with Tecnis® than with all of the other lens implants available today."
Dr. Watkins, who was an FDA investigator for the Tecnis® lens, will be among the first doctors in the nation to implant the lens. In fact, Watkins will be the only physician in Texas who will have access to the lens upon its initial release.
"This is a great opportunity for my patients to experience what I consider to be the best option for anyone who has cataracts or who is suffering from presbyopia, a natural condition whereby the eye has a diminished ability to focus on near objects as we get older," Dr. Watkins said.
In the U.S. clinical study on the Tecnis® lens, 94 percent of patients who had the lens implanted reported that their vision functioned well without glasses for all distances, including intermediate - which is vision we use when focused on a computer screen.
Some of the other benefits of the new Tecnis® Multifocal IOL include the ability to correct higher-order aberrations (spherical and chromatic aberration) for sharper vision and a design that performs well despite the size of the patient's pupil.
The Tecnis® lens has been used by ophthalmologists in Europe for several years and has a patient satisfaction rating of 95 percent, the highest of any Multifocal IOL.
