Multifocal Lenses Houston
If you undergo cataract surgery or presbyopic lens exchange (PreLex), your natural ocular lens will be replaced with an intraocular lens implant (IOL). Made from a clear plastic, intraocular lenses become a permanent fixture of the eye and finely focus light onto the retina for improved vision. However, some IOLs are monofocal, which limits a person's vision without glasses. With monofocal lenses people usually have distance vision only and must wear glasses for near vision. With multifocal lenses, offered at our Houston, Texas eye care center, individuals can focus on objects both near and far, and in most cases can complete day-to-day tasks without the aid of eye glasses. To learn more about this treatment option, please contact the Watkins Eye Center today to schedule a free consultation with Dr. Andrew Watkins.

Multifocal Lenses - An Overview
Multifocal lenses - such as the Tecnis® multifocal IOL - are a superior alternative to monofocal lens implants, as they function more like the eye's natural lens and allow for reduced dependency on corrective eye glasses. Indeed, many of our patients no longer require eye glasses at all after surgery. It should be noted, however, that most insurance companies will not cover the difference in cost between monofocal lenses and multifocal lenses. At our Houston eye care practice, we can provide you with a range of financing options, to help you get the treatment you deserve.
Benefits and Limitations
The benefits of multifocal lenses over monofocal lenses are numerous, and include:
- An ability to focus on both near and far objects
- Greater independence from eye glasses
- Improved ability to read print, including small print or print that is up close
- Superior intermediate vision (for computer and television viewing, for example)
- Excellent overall vision, day and night
We are advocates for multifocal lenses at our Houston eye care center, but it should be noted that they are not for everyone. Some things to consider if you are interested in multifocal lenses:
- Noticeable glare or halos around light sources are possible at night
- Even with multifocal lenses, approximately 20 percent of patients still require eye glasses for some tasks
- Does not treat or correct astigmatism
- May result in decreased ability to distinguish between shades of grey
- The additional cost of multifocal lenses likely will not be covered by your insurance provider
If you are undergoing presbyopic lens exchange or cataract surgery and are considering multifocal lenses over their monofocal counterparts, we would be happy to discuss risks, benefits, and other details with you during your initial consultation. We strive to provide our patients with the information that they need to make educated decisions regarding their treatment.
