IntraLase® Surgical Laser - Overview
The IntraLase® laser was approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration in 2001 for use in surgical vision correction. The laser replaces the traditional surgical blade, known as a microkeratome, used to create the corneal flap during surgery. This serves to further minimize risk and reduce instances of complications, while allowing for improved precision. Additionally, the laser simultaneously prepares the corneal tissue below the flap as it is forming the incision, so that it is in optimal condition for treatment with the excimer laser. Ultimately, the IntraLase® laser affords the patient a better chance for optimal results. We utilize the IntraLase® laser for advanced iLASIK surgery.
How Does the IntraLase® Laser Work?
Utilizing pulsed energy, the IntraLase® laser creates minute pockets of air inside the cornea in pre-determined spots as it moves back and forth across the eye. The bubbles begin to form a perforation, which results in a corneal flap. The Intralase® provides a level of precision not possible with a traditional surgical blade.
