Don't Let Clouded Vision Interfere with Your Life
Cataracts Houston
At the Watkins Eye Center, we treat a range of vision impairments, including cataracts. If you reside in the Houston, Texas area and are seeking outstanding eye care, our team would be happy to work with you. Our focus is on improving our patients' unaided vision. While eye glasses and contacts can alter incoming light so that vision is improved, they address only the symptoms and not the actual condition. We employ surgical techniques to remove and replace the damaged ocular lens, thus treating the condition and improving vision at the source. To schedule a consultation with Dr. Watkins, please contact our team of eye care specialists today.

Cataracts: What Are They and How Are They Formed?
If you suffer from cataracts, you could benefit from cataract surgery at our Houston, Texas eye care center. A cataract - a clouding of the ocular lens - can occur in one or both eyes. This clouding can greatly reduce vision capacity, limiting depth of vision and causing significant distortion or blurriness. Because the brain interprets the light that is exposed to the retina as an image, any distortion of this light will modify the image that the brain sees. A clouding of the lens distorts and fragments incoming light, resulting in vision impairment.

Cataracts typically occur as a natural result of the aging process. In fact, according to the National Eye Institute, more than half of all Americans develop a cataract by the age of 80. The protein in the eye's lens can start to clump together over time, resulting in a clouding of the lens. Healthy lenses are made up of precisely aligned proteins that allow light to pass through unimpeded, but these proteins and cells break down over time. Outside factors, such as smoking, diabetes, or extended exposure to sunlight, are thought to accelerate the process or place individuals at higher risk of cataracts.
Other determining factors include:
- Eye Surgery Complications - In some instances, a cataract may form as a side effect of eye surgery. In such cases, additional surgery would be required to remove the cataract and improve vision.
- Congenital Disease - Some individuals are born with one or both eyes affected by cataracts. In children, cataracts are often innocuous enough that they do not affect vision. However, if the cataract is severe, it will have to be removed.
- Eye Injury - A traumatic injury to the eye can cause a cataract, in some cases, years after the actual injury takes place.
- Radiation Exposure - Though rare, some patients develop cataracts after being exposed to radiation. Certain industries can place individuals at higher risk for radiation exposure.
