Cataract Surgery - Details and Options
Cataract surgery involves the removal of the eye's natural lens and the subsequent insertion of an artificial lens replacement known as an IOL (intraocular lens). At the Watkins Eye Center, we utilize multifocal lenses and monofocal lenses. Multifocal lenses provide excellent vision at all distances, as opposed to monofocal lenses, which can improve either near or distance vision, but not both.

There are two options for cataract surgery. The technique that is used will depend on your specific needs, and will be determined after diagnosing your condition at our eye care center.
- Phacoemulsification (Phaco) - The most common type of cataract surgery, phaco is performed by making a small incision on the side of the cornea (the clear covering over the eye). Through this incision, a small surgical probe can be inserted. The device emits an ultrasound wave that breaks up and softens the cataract, allowing it to be removed from the eye through suction. The technique is sometimes referred to as "small incision cataract surgery" and is preferred in most cases for its less-invasive nature.
- Extracapsular Surgery - The extracapsular technique is similar to the phaco procedure, but utilizes a larger incision that allows for the removal of the cataract in one piece. As with the phaco procedure, the rest of the lens is removed via suction.
If you have a cataract in both eyes, they will be treated separately, typically four to eight weeks apart, so that your vision can be maintained during the healing process. Once the cataract has been removed, the IOL is inserted. A clear plastic lens, the IOL becomes a part of the eye and functions just as the natural ocular lens would. The artificial lens requires no special maintenance of any kind and cannot be felt or seen.
Risks and Benefits
At the Watkins Eye Center in Houston, Texas, we educate our patients on the risks and benefits of cataract surgery so that they can make informed decisions regarding their treatment. Cataract surgery, like all surgical procedures, is not without risk. Among the risks of cataract surgery are infection, bleeding, loss of vision, retinal detachment, and irritation. These risks are rare, however, especially when the procedure is performed by an experienced surgeon such as Dr. Watkins.
"Words cannot adequately express my gratitude to each of you for your part in restoring my vision. I think God daily for the miracle I have experienced because of you, your caring and your expertise. This year “clearly it has been about my vision.”!"

The benefits of cataract surgery are many. According to the National Eye Institute, roughly 90 percent of individuals who undergo cataract surgery experience improved vision. As cataract surgery is one of the most commonly performed procedures in the United States, this accounts for a significant number of successful cases. With improved vision comes an improved quality of life. After cataract surgery, you will be able to see the smiling faces of friends and family and watch movies and television programs with improved clarity once again.
