We educate our patients on their options, as well as on the risks and benefits of treatment, so that they can make informed decisions regarding their vision care. Additionally, Dr. Watkins personally visits with every patient both prior to and after surgery to ensure that his or her individual needs are met. Every procedure at our Houston practice is also performed by Dr. Watkins, our ophthalmologist. Meet Dr. Watkins
Dr. Andy Watkins is the founder, president, and medical director of the Watkins Eye Center. He has been in practice since 1986 and specializes in cataract and refractive surgery. In his 25 years of practice, he has performed thousands of cataract and refractive surgery procedures.
Dr. Watkins received his undergraduate degree magna cum laude from the University of North Texas, where he also went on to receive a master's degree in counseling. Dr. Watkins received his medical degree from the University of Texas Medical School in Houston and served an internship in internal medicine at the Baylor College of Medicine Affiliated Hospitals. He then completed his specialty training in ophthalmology at the University of Texas Medical School in Houston.
Dr. Watkins is a member of the exclusive Society for Excellence in Eye Care and was one of only two physicians in the area to participate in the FDA investigation of the AMO Tecnis® multifocal intraocular lens. Prior to FDA approval of the IOL technology, Dr. Watkins reported his experience and patient outcomes to assist the FDA in its evaluation.
Dr. Watkins is certified by the American Board of Ophthalmology. He is a fellow of the American Academy of Ophthalmology and a member of the Texas Ophthalmological Association and the Houston Ophthalmological Society. In addition, he is also a member of the Harris County Medical Society, and the Texas Medical Association.
Dr. Watkins belongs to numerous professional groups including the American Society of Cataract and Refractive Surgery, the International Society of Refractive Surgery, the Outpatient Ophthalmic Surgery Society, Society for Excellence In Eye Care and the American Association of Ambulatory Surgery Centers. He has lectured at meetings of the American Society of Cataract and Refractive Surgery, American Society of Ophthalmic Administrators, European Society of Cataract and Refractive Surgery, and Ocular Surgery News Symposia. He has also lectured to ophthalmologists and optometrists about the AMO ARRAY®, the ReZoom®, and the Tecnis® multifocal intraocular lenses in multiple venues.
