What is iLASIK?

September 15, 2011 @ 08:47 PM — by Dr. L. Andrew Watkins

When it comes to dealing with refractive errors such as myopia (nearsightedness), hyperopia (farsightedness), and astigmatism, you have plenty of options out there to consider. While corrective lenses such as prescription contacts and eye glasses have been effective for many years, you should also consider speaking with a skilled Houston refractive surgeon like Dr. Andrew Watkins. He is committed to ensuring that each patient receives the best possible treatment for his or her eyes.

Customized Eye Care Just for You

Getting the best eye care means the customization of a vision correction plan. Your eyes are as unique as your fingerprint, and that goes for any refractive errors you may be facing. Sure, traditional LASIK eye surgery is safe and effective, but what about making it even more effective?

Is there a laser vision correction option that is even more effective than traditional LASIK surgery?

There is, and it’s something that we like to call iLASIK.

About iLASIK

Houston iLASIK is very similar to traditional LASIK, but it involves the use of specific instruments that take it to the next level of advanced eye care. iLASIK involves the use of the WaveScan WaveFront&™ System in combination with the VISX STAR S4 IRTM Excimer Laser with Iris Registration.

Essentially, iLASIK means custom LASIK that is tailored exactly to even the slightest imperfections on your cornea. In the end, this means greater precision, more accurate treatment, and less potential complications or side effects than traditional LASIK.

How iLASIK Works

If Dr. Watkins finds that you are a good candidate for LASIK surgery, he will begin the iLASIK process. The first step will involve an extremely accurate and detailed picture being taken of your eyes. The resulting image will be a 3D digital map of the surface of your eye which allows us to pinpoint imperfections on the corneal surface.

A laser is used to create a corneal flap. It’s through this flap that the actual vision correction is done. The laser used for the vision correction is ultra-precise and will use the 3D map of your eye to guide the degree of correction you need. There is no chance of human error here.

Why choose iLASIK?

Getting iLASIK with Dr. Watkins is a great idea. For one, he is a highly experience Houston-based ophthalmologist with 25 years of experience. His practice is state-of-the-art and his techniques are constantly refining and improving as the technology evolves.

iLASIK helps eliminate a number of the vision problems that even some traditional LASIK patients experience after surgery. These include:

  • Glare
  • Halos
  • Poor night vision
  • Haziness

With the greater precision of iLASIK, some people who are not candidates for traditional LASIK may be able to undergo laser vision correction.

Comprehensive Eye Care Services to Meet Your Needs

In addition to the customized LASIK surgery we’ve discussed above, Dr. Watkins offers many diverse eye care services and laser vision correction alternatives. He has performed thousands of cataract surgeries and corneal procedures with excellent results, so you can rest assured that you are in good and quite capable hands.
